It is almost time again for the members of NMTESOL to elect three members of the Board of Directors: President, Treasurer, and Web Coordinator. The term of service for these Board members will be the years 2016 and 2017. Before the voting can take place, though, we need your help in finding the best candidates for these positions. Please take a moment to consider whether you or someone you know would be able and willing to serve in one of these capacities. The President’s primary job is to lead the association, for example, by conducting meetings, representing the association to other professional associations and government offices, and taking a major role in organizing conferences. The Treasurer has responsibility for maintaining the association’s financial records and serves as liaison with the association’s accountant, and other duties. (Knowledge of QuickBooks is preferred but not required.) Web Coordinator has responsibility for the association’s email, online presence, social media, and other duties. In addition to being willing to fulfill the basic duties outlined above, the candidates must meet these criteria:
Anyone can recommend a person for the NMTESOL Board. If you wish to recommend yourself or someone else, please send recommendations to this e-mail address (nmtesol@gmail.com) along with a short introduction of the candidate. Send your candidate recommendations by December 31st 2015. Voting will be conducted online between January 4th and January 23rd, 2015. Results will be announced at our annual meeting on January 30th, 2015 and via email.

From the good news/bad news department… VP Colin Large Leaves NM for MA
The bad news is NMTESOL lost our Vice President Colin Large, but the good news is that he is moving on to bigger and better things. Over the summer, when informed that he was not selected to be the permanent director of the Center for English Language Programs (CELP) at New Mexico State University, he quickly got hired as the Associate Director of the Center for English Language and Orientation Programs (CELOP) at Boston University. In his own words, “I decided to go to Boston because Vanna let me buy another vowel.”
Colin joined the NMTESOL Board after the annual membership meeting in January 2014. He made a number of trips from Las Cruces to Albuquerque for various NMTESOL events, including our spring workshops at CNM and various meetings. For his biggest contribution to the association, however, he could stay at home. Colin organized our first Roadshow Workshop at NMSU in May 2015 (see the Summer 2015 newsletter for more details). That was a particularly memorable event because 40 Ecuadorian teachers of English who were studying at NMSU then were able to attend the workshop too.
When leaving NMTESOL, Colin offered these thoughts to his New Mexican colleagues: “I would encourage the membership to get involved with the leadership of the association. In general, teachers have a difficult time assuming leadership roles – the field is to a certain degree an egalitarian field. However, it is really important that the members get involved. Without that involvement, it is very difficult to improve the field. One of the best avenues for professional development is through peer education. We all have something to learn from one another.”
The Board and membership of NMTESOL wish Colin and his family the best in Boston!
Looking ahead: If you or someone you know is interested in serving on the NMTESOL Board as Vice President, please contact the association.
NMTESOL will hold its first Las Cruces Workshop at New Mexico State University on Saturday May 30th, 2015 from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM. We will also be co-hosting a reception on Friday evening, May 29th with NMSU’s Center for English Language Programs in honor of 54 Ecuadorian teachers participating in the “Go Teacher” program.
We invite you to submit a proposal for a 75-minute presentation at the workshop. Presentations can cover any aspect of English language teaching at any level and can be a presentation by a single speaker or a panel of speakers.
Please complete the form at this link https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LasCrucesPresenters to submit your proposal.
