NMTESOL Open Board Meeting Invitation – May 19th, 2018

Dear NMTESOL:

NMTESOL in its present-day iteration has been around since 2008. In these 10 years, we have held numerous state-wide conferences as well as local workshops, produced a regular newsletter, greeted foreign visitors, and even have begun a professional journal.

Currently, the organization is suffering from a decline in membership and as a result, participation and leadership. We were unable to enlist anyone to fill several open Board positions. There will be added vacancies by the end of the year. We seek to restructure the organization to better reflect and meet the needs of the membership, but we will be unable to move forward without leadership on the Board and member ownership. This ownership will allow the professionals of New Mexico to have an International TESOL affiliate organization. In order to do so, we are opening up our board meetings to members, starting in May.

Our first open board meeting will be on May 19th, 2018 at 2 PM. Click this link to join: https://hangouts.google.com/group/Q8LIgRH6hRvqCGrs2

The New Mexican immigrant, refugee, and indigenous second language learner communities continue to have a profound need for various services including English language instruction. While the number of certified ESL teachers in New Mexico has been reduced due to declining state funding, the number of instructors and tutors who serve ESL students in our state remains high.

We would like to continue to support the state with professional development opportunities and want to engage those in the classroom to help us define what those opportunities look like.

By opening up the meeting to members, we hope to meet some specific goals. Goals of the first meeting include:

  • defining and promoting leadership opportunities
  • soliciting service and participation to keep the organization alive and moving forward

If you cannot attend on the 19th, please send your comment and ideas by Friday, May 18th to nmtesol at gmail dot com.

We look forward to your attendance and contributions.

Sincerely,

NMTESOL Board
Amy Zhupikov, Vice-President
Dean Sundberg, Treasurer
Penny Mortier, Secretary
Ruth Cisneros, Newsletter Editor

Nominations + Elections

It is almost time again for the members of NMTESOL to elect three members of the Board of Directors: President, Treasurer, and Web Coordinator.

The term of service for these Board members will be the years 2018 and 2019. Before the voting can take place, though, we need your help in finding the best candidates for these positions.  Please take a moment to consider whether you or someone you know would be able and willing to serve in one of these capacities.

The President’s primary job is to lead the association, for example, by conducting meetings, representing the association to other  professional associations and government offices, and taking a major role in organizing conferences.

The Treasurer has responsibility for maintaining the association’s financial records and serves as liaison with the association’s accountant, and other duties.  (Knowledge of QuickBooks is preferred but not required.)

Web Coordinator has responsibility for the association’s email, online presence, social media, and other duties. In addition to being willing to fulfill the basic duties outlined above, the candidates must meet these criteria:

  1. They must be willing to become a member of NMTESOL (if not already a member).
  2. If elected, they must be willing to serve in the position for the duration of their two-year term.
  3. If elected, they must be willing to take part in monthly NMTESOL Board of Directors meetings, which are generally conducted online using Google Hangouts/Skype.

Anyone can recommend a person for the NMTESOL Board. If you wish to recommend yourself or someone else, please send recommendations to this e-mail address (nmtesol@gmail.com) along with a short introduction of the candidate.  Send your candidate recommendations by December 31st 2017.

Voting will be conducted online. Results will be announced at our annual meeting, via email, and website.

Keep your ears to the ground for the next professional development opportunity coming up quick!

Vice President Vacancy

From the good news/bad news department… VP Colin Large Leaves NM for MA

The bad news is NMTESOL lost our Vice President Colin Large, but the good news is that he is moving on to bigger and better things. Over the summer, when informed that he was not selected to be the permanent director of the Center for English Language Programs (CELP) at New Mexico State University, he quickly got hired as the Associate Director of the Center for English Language and Orientation Programs (CELOP) at Boston University. In his own words, “I decided to go to Boston because Vanna let me buy another vowel.”

Colin joined the NMTESOL Board after the annual membership meeting in January 2014. He made a number of trips from Las Cruces to Albuquerque for various NMTESOL events, including our spring workshops at CNM and various meetings. For his biggest contribution to the association, however, he could stay at home. Colin organized our first Roadshow Workshop at NMSU in May 2015 (see the Summer 2015 newsletter for more details). That was a particularly memorable event because 40 Ecuadorian teachers of English who were studying at NMSU then were able to attend the workshop too.

When leaving NMTESOL, Colin offered these thoughts to his New Mexican colleagues: “I would encourage the membership to get involved with the leadership of the association. In general, teachers have a difficult time assuming leadership roles – the field is to a certain degree an egalitarian field. However, it is really important that the members get involved. Without that involvement, it is very difficult to improve the field. One of the best avenues for professional development is through peer education. We all have something to learn from one another.”

The Board and membership of NMTESOL wish Colin and his family the best in Boston!

Looking ahead: If you or someone you know is interested in serving on the NMTESOL Board as Vice President, please contact the association.

Call for Nominations to the NMTESOL Board of Directors

Dear colleagues:

It is time for the members of NMTESOL to elect three members of the Board of Directors: Vice President, Secretary, and Journal Editor. The term of service for these Board members will be 2013-2014.

Before the voting can take place, though, we need your help in finding the best candidates for these positions. Please take a moment to consider whether you or someone you know would be able and willing to serve in one of these capacities.

The Vice President’s primary job is to lead the association during the President’s absence. The Board also assigns special projects to the VP. Two pending projects are membership recruitment and a state-wide survey of English language programs at all levels. The goal of the survey is to prepare a unique and informative report of the scope of TESOL in New Mexico.

The Secretary has responsibility for recording Board meetings and votes, managing Board elections, and keeping the records of the association. Also, the Secretary has prepared printed material for our annual conference.

The Journal Editor is a new role on the Board. Previously, the association published a quarterly electronic NMTESOL Newsletter. Recently the Board decided to expand this publication and change the name to NMTESOL Journal. This Board member is responsible for accepting submissions and editing this new electronic publication.

In addition to being willing to fulfill the basic duties outlined above, the candidates must be:
• members of NMTESOL
• able to serve the duration of their two-year term
• able to take part in monthly meetings, which are usually conducted online using Skype

If you wish to nominate yourself or someone else, please send nominations to this post or our email address: nmtesol@gmail.com along with a short introduction of the nominee. We encourage you to send your nominations by December 19, 2012. Voting will be conducted online in January.

We appreciate your support of NMTESOL.
